(TSX / STATS) -- The Los Angeles Rams signed punter Johnny Hekker to a two-year contract extension, the team announced.

Hekker, who initially signed a six-year extension in 2014, will remain with the team through the 2022 season. The deal gives the 27-year-old $10 million guaranteed, the most ever for a punter, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

Hekker has led the league in punting yards the last two seasons, and his average of 46.9 yards per punt ranks third all-time in NFL history. He has been named a first-team All-Pro in three of the last four seasons.

"I think being able to get a player of Johnny's caliber -- you get around Johnny, he's a special person, he's a special player, he's been very productive, an all-pro player the last couple years and then what he brings to the locker room matches up with the production you see on the field in terms of the leadership, the intangibles," coach Sean McVay said.

"When you look and vote for captains, he's a runaway with the special teams votes because of the respect that his teammates have for him."
