(TSX / STATS) -- The San Francisco 49ers signed linebacker Elijah Lee from the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad to a two-year deal on Wednesday to add depth at the position.

Rookie linebacker Reuben Foster is expected to miss about a month with a high ankle sprain suffered in Sunday's 23-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

To make room on the roster, the 49ers waived offensive lineman John Theus.

The 6-foot-2, 229-pound Lee was originally drafted by the Vikings in the seventh round of this year's draft out of Kansas State. In three college seasons, he appeared in 39 games (26 starts) and registered 209 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, five interceptions, five passes defensed, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

The 6-6, 303-pound Theus was the second of three fifth-round picks by San Francisco in 2016. He appeared in four games (one start) as a rookie last season and was inactive for last week's game against Carolina.
