(TSX / STATS) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Jay McClement to a professional tryout contract on Friday.

McClement, 34, has played the last three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. As a member of the Hurricanes, McClement tallied 15 goals and 40 points in 224 contests, while winning 53.7 percent of his faceoffs and logging the most cumulative short-handed minutes of any Carolina forward.

The Penguins have a gaping hole in their roster at center behind superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. If McClement proves to be a capable man in the middle, he has a good shot at making the team the way the roster is currently constructed.

A 12-year NHL veteran, McClement, who stands 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, has suited up for 906 career NHL games with Carolina, Toronto, Colorado and St. Louis, producing 90 goals and 154 assists.

McClement, a native of Kingston, Ontario, was originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the second round in 2001.
